Fleshed out Main idea and Backup

Several weeks ago i posted a blog detailing my final idea for the project which is a 3d short film. There were 3 story ideas that could potentially work. However i will try to merge them into one animation as different acts. The first act will be following the story arc of a toaster robot signed up by the police force to seek revenge for what the dangerous mafia gang did to him. The second act will be a prequel of the fisrt act and will look at the history of the main bad guy from act 1, Grease gun kelly. This arc will uncover how the bad guy became a bad guy and will show his rise to power in a mafia gang. This could also show what the mafia did to the act one protagonist to link it to the first part. Act 3 will be the return of the protagonist form act 1 and will be his fall from grace as a twist is revealed.

Act 1 Characters
Toasty - Protagonist
Vendo - Comedy relief sidekick
Grease Gun Kelly - Antagonist
Various Mafia Henchmen
Police Chief

Act 1 premise
Crime in the streets of Robopolis is at an all time high and the Cyberpolice are dangerously low on available officers to fight the crime. To bring an end to this they have started to revive ancient and obsolete robots and are implanting new behaviour chips to help fight the mafia. The protagonist, an old obsolete toaster robot is brought back along with Vendo the Vending machine to fight the mafia and recover the protagonists memories from the ones who stole them.

Act 2 characters
Kellgan - Protagonist
Police Chief
Mafia Henchmen
Mafia Boss - Antagonist

Act 2 premise
Kellgan and undercover police officer must infiltrate the mafia and eventually rise through the ranks to become a trusted member to topple the mafia and its criminal empire and change the mafia ways to do good rather than evil. To do this he must dispose of the previous boss's behaviour chip and take command. Toastageddon, the current boss, is disposed of by a different robot and leads the mafia into a new age of criminal activities. Kellgan helpless to do so must do as she is told to stay undercover as the new bosses right hand robot.

Act 3 Characters
Kellgan - Protagonist
Toastageddon - Antagonist

Act 3 premise
After retrieving his memories, Toasty (Toastageddon). Is reinstated as the mafia's boss and starts to fight Kellgan(Grease Gun kelly) and tries to avenge Vendo. After a long battle, Kellgan defeats Toastageddon but only after he uses the last of his energy supply to wipe out the police department ensuring the city falls into the abyss of crime. Kellgan survives.

Toasty - normal name/ Mafia name - Toastageddon
Grease Gun Kelly - Mafia name/ Kellgan

If for whatever reason i cannot complete this project, i have a Plan B in place in which i will do choose an act that is closer to being completed and will complete that instead.

Trying out software

In my post last week i decided that my animation will be completed in Maya.
I have been learning how to use the software to 3d model and somewhat understand how the animation works. Since Maya is used in on the units that is taking place on this course i have been using this to learn how to 3d model. Below is a 3d model that i have been creating for that unit and will not be used in the final animation.

This 3d model is based off of a chinook helcopter which is being used for the 3d modelling an animation unit. I have also played around with the animation portion of Maya and have discovered that it uses keyframes. This allows me to do very simple movements such as the helicopter blades spinning very easily because it doesnt need to be done frame by frame. While the animation is a simple movement between two points and is very basic i somewhat understand how to animate models that do not have a rig.

Plannning for the animation

Since i have very little experience with 3d animation software i am going to have to decide what prgrams i am going to use. The most obvious choices would be to use Maya and Blender for both the animation and 3D model design and creation.

After doing som eresearch, another path that i could take is to create all of the aniimations in Maya and Blender but use the game engine Unity to create environments and for all of the lighting abilities. This path seems like the most doable since i have very little skill in maya and blender and i may find this easier. However the end product may look bad since the assets in unity would look very different from the ones that will create. This process is detailed in the webpage linked here [https://gamedevelopment.tutsplus.com/tutorials/importing-an-animated-character-into-unity-3d--cms-27588]

However after looking on forums about animations in Unity, [https://www.quora.com/Can-I-use-Unity3D-for-3D-animation-only-and-not-for-creating-a-game] many people say that it is much better to do everything in a dedicated 3d modelling and animation tool such as blender or maya. This is because these generally have better tools and are made specifically for 3d modelling an animation. Before i start properly creating an animating i will have to take some time to try different software to see which one is right for me to use based on usability and availability.

Final idea proposal

Final Idea

Last week's blog was focused on narrowing down the 5 initial ideas to 2 and much like last week, this week will be focused on narrowing it down to one final idea. The final idea is to create a 3d animated short film as i feel as though it is a good chance to learn new skills such as animation and 3d modelling. While i have done a small amount of 3d modelling before, they were very rudimentary and lacked polygons which made them very angular. Therefore i feel as though this is the chance to improve and learn new techniques to create good looking 3d models.

Rejected Idea
The idea that i have rejected is to make a game. One of the main reasons for rejecting this idea is that i have made a game before. While this would be an opportunity to improve my game making skills, i feel as though learning new skills such as animation and 3d modelling would be both more challenging and more interesting since effectively, i would be doing the same sort of things if i were to create a game.

This 3d animation is to be undertaken by myself and will last until the 31st of may 2019. I plan for this 3d animation to last around 5 minutes

I have several ideas for the type of short film that i want to make and are detailed below.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Story concept 1
This idea is inspired b movies where the plot and voice acting are cheesy and buddy cop movies

The world is inhabited by an evolving robotic species much like humas that currently reside in our world. A malfunctioning toaster robot is reporgrammed by the Robot police force to fight crime in a last ditch effort to bring peace to the city of Robopolis and take down the dreaded Grease gun kelly head of the greasers a crime family. To do this the protagonist must enlist the help of the only other robot who cares, Vendo. The duo must then defeat the greasers, save the city and recover the one thing the greasers stole. This is a story where revenge is a dish best served toasted.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Story concept 2
The second idea that i have is a prequel to the previous idea which details Grease gun kelly's former life before becoming a gangster. This is a murder mystery which sends grease gun kelly on a wild goose chase to find the killer before they strike again. This tale also shows his fall from grace and founding of the greasers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Story concept 3
The third idea is the adventures of vendo. This would detail the origins of vendo the trusty sidekick and possibly the adventures after saving robopolis.

Since these story concepts are related i could also make them into one story. For example concept 1 could be the start concept 2 cold be the middle and concept 3 as an intermission.

Project Supervisor meeting 24.09.2018

Main Idea 1
My last post documented my initial ideas for the BSC project and since then i have discussed this with the project supervisor. We have discussed my initial ideas and have narrowed it down to two ideas. One of these ideas is the creation of a short film this, for me, is the is a possibly good choice as i have never properly created a fully articulated 3d model and i have never created a 3D animation. I feel as though this would be a good choice as it would allow me to utilise several skills that are learnt in other units. Since i have never really done any 3D animation this will allow me to learn several skills and this should be a challenge. I would like to make this 3D short film somewhate resemble the fallout 4's style of retro-futurism such as the robots and general style

Main Idea 2
The other idea is to create a game much like my last one however with more custom assets such as 3D models and other assets such as textures and sound clips. If i were to continue with this idea there are several routes i could take. The first would be to completely rebuild the last game i made. The main problem with my last game was that it was incredibly buggy and used premade assets such as characters and textures. As well as this the gameplay was very clunky. This would therefore give me the chance to refine the game to make it substantially more playable. Another option would be to make a different type of game such as a story based first person shooter with character dialogue such as fallout new vegas.

Rejected Ideas
One of the rejected ideas was the robotics project. The main reason that i have rejected this idea is because i have very little affinity for programming and very little experience with robotics. I feel as though i know too little to be able to complete a project with robotics. Another reason that i have rejected this idea is that there are guides available online which document exactly how to program a robot to carry out tasks and how to put them together.

The second rejected idea is the 2D platformer. The main reason that i have rejected this idea is that depending on the program used to create the game, it may be too easy to make. For example using game maker, a 2D game could be made in a week. Another reason that i have rejected this idea is that i dont really want to do this. This is because it doesn't really interest me due to me not being very good at drawing sprites.
